The Vjetrenica Quarries
The splendid Popolo Polije valley, in the south-west of Herzegovina has the largest network of quarries of the whole country, the Vietrenica Quarries, near Ravno, about 80 km from Mostar. The strong and fresh wind that constantly blows at their entrance, the Vjetar, apart from giving its name to the quarries, makes it a delightful and natural refreshing place during the hottest months. The entire system of canals is 6 km long and the highly spectacular main canal is 2.5 km long. Inside the quarries, many archaeological exhibits have been found, amongst which are the remains of bears and leopards, and cave paintings, estimated to be 10,000 years old. Small and large lakes (the largest is 180-metre wide), waterfalls and streams characterize this really unique place and a biodiversity of rare and endemic species (more than 200 different types) live in these aquatic places. Undoubtedly, a visit not to be missed.
